Established by David Bucovy, AIA in 2003, the firm is responsible for a diverse portfolio of work in New York, from prestigious hospitality spaces including Michelin-starred restaurants, to bespoke residences featured in Architectural Digest, and high-profile commercial destinations such as flagships for international galleries. DBA delivers holistic architectural and design services, including newbuild projects and historically sensitive renovation, as well as artful and refined interior concepts. The practice is continuously inspired by the nexus of history, culture and activity that is New York, and its projects seek to positively contribute to the unique life and fabric of the city.

Our philosophy is to listen to people, work thoughtfully and with rigor, act with integrity and find joy in the moment.

APPROACH

DBA is a place where expertise meets delight. The practice’s interdisciplinary work is led by rigor, responsibility, collaboration and curiosity. Foundational to every project is the process of building relationships with clients and understanding the rich stories of a place. DBA’s work is responsive, driven by context and client vision rather than unbending design principles. Projects are underpinned by passion, research and a deep architectural and technical knowledge base, resulting in highly crafted spatial experiences. As well as designers, members of DBA act as facilitators — catalyzing diverse networks of collaborators, from structural engineers to interior designers and kitchen consultants. DBA deftly works with all stakeholders and contributors to navigate unexpected challenges and unlock new opportunities, ultimately delivering highly successful projects.

THE OFFICE OF
DAVID BUCOVY ARCHITECT

DAVID BUCOVY,
AIA
FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL
David established DBA in 2003 after extensive experience at architecture firms large and small, where he honed his expertise in people-centered design and historical renovation. Originally from Canada, David moved to New York in 1996 — and to this day, he remains endlessly fascinated by the city’s people, buildings and culture. A lover of art, philosophy, archaeology and architectural history, David applies a keen academic grounding, humanist perspective and encyclopedic knowledge to DBA’s work. Clients rely on him for technical advice, knowing that his ability to solve complex problems results in projects that exceed expectations. Crucially, his approach to architecture is centered on collaborative interpersonal relationships, with clients and consultants alike. Outside of his practice, David translates his curiosity about history and the natural world into collecting — from art and artifacts to natural rocks and minerals.

NIALL HEFFERNAN
DIRECTOR
BIO + -
Director Niall joined DBA in 2011, after working for Conklin Costantin Architects. Trained at the City College of New York, Niall turned to architecture after a career in the nightlife and hospitality industry. As an architect, he skillfully applies this understanding of how to create positive atmospheres and build community through space. Born in Ireland, Niall moved to New York in 1994 and loves its diverse, characterful neighborhoods. A committed cyclist, Niall traverses the city on bike for commuting and pleasure, rain or shine. He is inspired by sustainable urbanism and figures such as Jane Jacobs who fought to keep New York community-centered.
STACEY BUCOVY
STUDIO ADMINISTRATOR
BIO + -
Stacey has been core to the spirit of DBA from the beginning, as the studio administrator — and David’s wife. Her diverse skill set was developed through an accomplished career in the food and hospitality business. A native New Yorker, Stacey graduated from Baruch College and attended Peter Kump’s French Cooking School (now The Institute of Culinary Education). She worked for restauranteurs Bernard Leroy and Steven Mass before establishing the successful catering company Fresh Dish. At DBA, Stacey runs a friendly and productive studio, where people feel fulfilled by their work. She sees the entire DBA team as her family, and enjoys bringing people together through food.
